Laughter is Nature’s Medicine

When was the last time you had a good old-fashioned-grab-your-belly-because-it-aches laugh?  Really think about it…was it today?…this week?…this month?…this year?…  I am truly hoping that you and your family and friends laugh as often as possible! I had a couple of those belly-laugh experiences in the last week.  The first laugh-fest took place when I was on the phone with one of my fabulous sisters and we started laughing at a story I was telling her.  The more she laughed, the more I laughed…around and around we went!  It was exhilarating!  We laughed and and laughed and laughed!  When we got off the phone I was still giggling and reeling from the energy and high it had produced.

Laughter

My second laugh-fest this week took place over the weekend.  Seven of my dear friends and I were eating dinner and talking.  The conversation went in so many different directions, it was instinctively brilliant!  It took on a life of it’s own.  We laughed at so many obscure things…for well over an hour.  Our jaws ached, our stomachs cramped, our eyes teared…it was so intoxicating!

There are so many great benefits to laughing, and I’m afraid that in this all too serious and fast paced world, people just don’t take the time to laugh enough, they don’t allow themselves to laugh and to find the humor in life.  Laughter truly is a medicine of sorts…it can change your mood, your negative thoughts can dissolve, and it spreads faster and is more contagious than any cold or flu! Here are some benefits:

Laughter is Nature’s Medicine!

Laughter relaxes the whole body – It relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes.

Laughter boosts the immune system – It decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease.

Laughter triggers the release of endorphines – The body’s natural feel-good chemicals.  Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.

Laughter protects the heart – It improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other  cardiovascular problems.

You can not feel anxious, angry, or sad when you are laughing!  Humor gets you out of your head and away from your troubles!  Laughter helps you forget judgments, criticisms and doubts!  So…

Lighten up and laugh more! (Here are a few ideas to get you started!)

Smile.  Don’t take things so seriously.  Laugh at yourself.  Keep things in perspective.  Pay attention to children and emulate them.  Spend time with fun people.  Be playful. Watch funny movies.  Flirt with your Love.  Count your blessings!
