Life is Gradual

Life is gradual

How does it happen? One day we wake up and life has snuck up on us. We are no longer a child, no longer a carefree twenty-something...we are all of a sudden in our forties...YIKES! I know a lot of people can get blindsided by extra weight gain, or by being unhappy with themselves in one way or another. They wake up one morning and ask themselves, "How did I get here?" It appears that life is going along as usual and one day your life isn't what you thought it would be. Have you been in that position? Well, most things in life sneak up on us in a gradual way. We don't all of a sudden gain fifty pounds, thank God! We don't spontaneously have four teenagers in the house, double thank God for that! We don't become an alcoholic overnight and we don't advance to the top in one day. Life … [Read more...]

Are You Flexible?

flexible

To be flexible means that our body is limber, pliable, and fluid…it also means that our mind is able to bend and to see another person's point of view…to be able to put ourselves in someone's shoes…to feel empathetic, compassion, non-stringent and to be able to "Go with the flow". Are you flexible? The other day I took an aerobics class at the gym to which I belong. I could tell there were many ladies who frequented this particular class, but this was my first time attending. To everyone's astonishment, except mine, the regular instructor was not there. (GASP) There was a substitute! As we were guiding our bodies in an attempt to become more flexible, I could see and hear whispers of disappointment about the way the instructor was teaching the class. She obviously was not doing the … [Read more...]

Right on Time

right on time

When my youngest daughter Quinn was just a toddler, she would quite often tell me something that really helped me to be present. At times, we would be rushing to get into the car and off to "somewhere" and I would say out of habit, "Hurry girls or we will be late!" My insightful, joyful, and naturally positive Quinn would always reply, "Mom, we're gonna be right on time!" The way she said this was so emphatic, as if she were intending it to be so. And, truth be told, we were always "right on time". "Right on time" may not be by a clock's standard, but we were always arriving at the perfect time…just when someone was pulling out of the front parking space. We would arrive at the very same time as the person we were meeting. We would arrive just as the rain stopped. The list goes on and … [Read more...]

An Exercise in Balance

Balance

Last week my siblings, their spouses, and all their kids came out to our home for a fun family visit. Among these 20 family members who stayed in our home, 8 of the children had iPhones. My sister, Maria, and I had a great idea that we implemented at the beginning of their visit here. We thought we would encourage good old-fashioned social fun and playing…some balance…so we collected all the kid's phones and told them that we were going to have a phone-free weekend. They were to fully enjoy their cousins without looking down at their phones the whole time. We recalled, as children, hanging out with our cousins. We played outside, invented games, laughed together, and truly enjoyed each other. We helped our grandparents, aunts, and uncles cook and clean. The older cousins played with and … [Read more...]

Back to Basics

Back to Basics

Is your life harried? Are you constantly running around, late to everything? Do you look or feel disheveled? Is your calendar so filled with errands, kid's activities, and juggling your to-do list that you feel like there is no time to breathe? Is your home a mess? Do you feel frustrated a lot of the time? Are there things you would like to do, but you just can't find the time or energy? I know that this is quite common, particularly if you have small children at home. I know that the tasks, chores, and duties pile high and can make you feel overwhelmed, as if you are constantly swimming upstream. It is easy to feel this way, especially when you add school-aged children's extra-curricular activities, homework, and requests to this heap. Dinner needs to be made, laundry needs to be … [Read more...]

The Forbidden Fruit is the Sweetest

apple

"The forbidden fruit is the sweetest." This cliche is taken straight from a story in the Bible. It refers to Eve wanting to taste the apple from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil so badly. She struggled with wanting it...needing it...undoubtedly even more so because she was told that she couldn't have it. She was tempted beyond her self control. She eventually gives in to her desire…with consequences.  Don't we all think that way when something is forbidden or just out of our reach? I know I do. The other day I was driving down the street and I realized that I left my water bottle at home. I drink a lot of water as a rule...so just knowing that I didn't have water with me, suddenly I unrealistically began to feel really thirsty! I sat there wondering: If I had a bottle of water … [Read more...]

Stay Healthy This Holiday Season!

be-healthy-feel-alive

The Holidays and "Flu Season" are upon us, and I don't know about you...but I want to stay healthy again this season!  For several years my family and I have been able to dodge the flu as well as major colds (knock on wood!).  I will share with you my thoughts on the subject, as well as what we do in my home...and maybe it will help you to stay healthy this season as well! There are seven areas that need to be given attention and effort.  Some are self explanitory, but I will share with you my theories: 1) Hygiene- During the flu season, we are indoors more often as the weather gets colder.  We have more social gatherings with Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Eve, and all the fun and parties that go along with the holidays.  With more sneezing, coughing, and hand … [Read more...]

Create a Vision Board!

Vision Board

Being healthy means so much more than just eating right, exercising, drinking enough water, and getting enough sleep. It also means having a healthy mind and spirit. We need to nurture all aspects of "us" in order to be truly healthy.   We all need to have goals and dreams for our future.  Having realistic goals and aspirations will keep us moving forward, will help us work towards something exceptional, and will keep our mind active in a positive way to help us avoid negativity and depression. One way to cultivate a healthy mind and spirit is to make a vision board. A vision board is a great way to have a daily, visual reminder of your dreams and goals. This can help us stay on the right track of being healthy in all ways, focusing on the positive.  While you are making and using your … [Read more...]

Take this word out of your vocabulary!!

Anti-should

"Should" - This is one of the most damaging words in our language! Every time we use the word "should", we are, in effect, saying "wrong". Usually when you think about the things you think you "should" have done or "should" do - you are only trying to please other people. Sometimes you use this word as a result of living up to your (or someone else's) unrealistic expectations. This usually occurs because you are afraid or feel you are not good enough. Don't live up to someone else's standards - what do you want?!? Set your goals and expectations at a reasonable and attainable height. Listen to the words you speak and to your self talk. Be conscious of how many times and in what circumstances you say or think the word "should". When you notice a "should" replace it with "If I really … [Read more...]

Jumping For Joy is Good Exercise!

Jumping For Joy

When was the last time you felt so much joy in your heart that you couldn't contain yourself?  Can you remember the circumstances?  Did you squeal and laugh and jump up and down???  Did you dance around the house and sing at the top of your lungs?  Did you raise your hands up to the sky and yell praises of gratitude?  Did you cry warm tears of  joy? Hopefully this memory is not in the too distant past!  It is so healthy for you to Jump For Joy!  It … [Read more...]
