Radio Show: “Where Do You Focus Your Energy?”

It is so very easy to focus your energy on the one person who is being nasty to you instead of focusing on all the wonderful people in your life. Let's take a look at how we can learn from these negative people and shift our focus to goodness! My segment begins at minute 47:05 Find Additional Lifestyle Podcasts with TNTBS on BlogTalkRadio … [Read more...]

Life is Gradual

Life is gradual

How does it happen? One day we wake up and life has snuck up on us. We are no longer a child, no longer a carefree twenty-something...we are all of a sudden in our forties...YIKES! I know a lot of people can get blindsided by extra weight gain, or by being unhappy with themselves in one way or another. They wake up one morning and ask themselves, "How did I get here?" It appears that life is going along as usual and one day your life isn't what you thought it would be. Have you been in that position? Well, most things in life sneak up on us in a gradual way. We don't all of a sudden gain fifty pounds, thank God! We don't spontaneously have four teenagers in the house, double thank God for that! We don't become an alcoholic overnight and we don't advance to the top in one day. Life … [Read more...]

What Goes Around Comes Around

what goes around comes around

We have all heard this warning: What goes around comes around. I say it is a warning, because it is usually used to scare people into doing what is right. People say it with an "I told you so" tone in their voice and look on their face…You know that look! Have you been told this? Have you experienced the aftermath of not heeding this warning? Have you thought about this before your actions and therefore had a happy ending? I can tell you that I have done both. I have seen the fallout of not taking this seriously. I have also been on the positive side of this. I really learned this lesson well when I was 22 years old. I was a single mom, going to college to get my degree and teaching credential. I was not prepared for one of my final exams, so I called the professor and told him I … [Read more...]

Reignite Your Imagination

As I listen to my two youngest daughters playing with each other, it makes me chuckle. Their pretend play is enchanting. They are fairies, witches, babies, mommies, princesses, and princes. Their land of make-believe comes alive with every word and prop. Do you remember using your imagination like that when you were a young child? I sure do. It was magical and freeing and exciting! What happens to our ability to "make-believe" as we get older? Yes, we mature and take on more and more responsibilities…but should that diffuse our wild imaginations? Unfortunately growing into an adult does just that. But I don't think our imagination needs to go dormant. Using your imagination is a very empowering tool. Picasso said, "Everything you can imagine is real." What does that mean exactly? … [Read more...]

You Get More Flies With Honey…

I'm sure you have heard the expression, "You get more flies with honey than with vinegar". What this essentially means is that if you are sweet and kind, people will be attracted to you, and you will most likely get the response you want…and if you are sour, you will get the opposite response. Well, I'm here to tell you that this is the truth! In my life I have experienced many, many examples of this truth. I will now tell you about a situation that happened recently to prove this point. This past summer, our Casita was broken into. Between the damage and the theft, we experienced a pretty hefty loss. When we called to report this, we were impressed that a police officer and a detective came out. They took prints, swabbed for DNA, and took a thorough report. We were so happy that these … [Read more...]

You Can’t Change the Weather…

It is inevitable, that no matter what climate you live in, people feel the need to complain about it. I hear it all around me, "It is so HOT, I can't wait until the weather cools down!"…"I hate the rain!"…"Whenever it is windy I get a headache!"…"This is the worst winter ever!"… And on and on! What is the purpose of complaining about the weather? Will complaining change the weather? No! So why do people feel that they need to complain about something that they can't change? The weather is just an example that is consistent. I hear this all the time about circumstances that can't be changed: Traffic, work schedules, unexpected illness, etc. What is the purpose and the inevitable outcome of complaining about something you cannot change? I wrote a blog entitled The Benefits of … [Read more...]

Take Your Focus off Your Problems

For the past several weeks I have had a plugged ear. It has not been painful, but it has been uncomfortable. It feels like I am under water. I have been to several doctors, including an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist. They have flushed, tested, and pressurized. I have been prescribed antibiotics, ear drops, and steroids. I'm still under water. When you have an ailment or a problem that you are dealing with, it is really easy to let that situation be in the forefront of your mind. It just is. Thinking about it, trying to solve it, hoping it will go away...all these thoughts can be self-consuming. If we let our minds really wonder, we can head straight down that negative spiral and think the worst: Is it cancer? Will I lose my hearing? How much longer can I take this? Will life … [Read more...]

To Assume is a Dangerous Act

Have you heard this old saying? Well, this saying has a lot of truth to it. It is so easy to assume, isn't it? It is easy to assume that people think the same way you do. It's easy to assume that people are in the same mood as you. It's easy to assume that people have the same background as you. It's easy to assume that you know what's best for others. It's easy to assume that you know someone else's intentions. It's easy to assume the worst in others, isn't it? I have been witness to so many examples of this in my life. I have been guilty of this unattractive behavior as well. When we assume, it never ends well. When we assume, we are not fully communicating or understanding a situation or a person. I have seen this action break up so many friendships and relationships. I have … [Read more...]

Life is Like a Sitcom

"A situation comedy, often shortened to sitcom, is a genre of comedy that features characters sharing the same common environment, such as a home or workplace, with often humorous dialogue. Such programs originated in radio, but today, sitcoms are found mostly on television as one of its dominant narrative forms." Think about your favorite sitcom. Think about all the silly and frustrating situations that we watch and that make us laugh. The characters get into predicaments that we would cringe at if they actually happened to us. We would be impatient, get angry, and say things that aren't very nice. The characters on TV that are quirky and make us laugh on our couches would irritate us to no end in real life. We would bitch and moan, complain, and find no humor in it at all. We … [Read more...]

Excitement or Fear?

excitement or fear

I am so excited! I guess you can say I am fearful as well. I have learned that excitement and fear are in the same family, they are just a small perspective shift away from each other. Are you aware of that? You can be afraid of something, but if you shift your attitude and perspective just a bit, then it can turn into excitement. How FUN is that!?!? I have been doing a lot of this lately, and it feels so great! I am stretching and growing so much as a result of this new practice. I liken it to a roller coaster ride: When I am in a line to get on a roller coaster, I am a bundle of nerves. I am watching the steel car whoosh past me at lightning speed, I am hearing the terrifying screams, and I am anticipating my heart dropping to my toes. I am so nervous and afraid. After I get on that … [Read more...]
