Inspired By My Teenager

inspired

This week, I am spotlighting one of my daughters. Ryan is almost 15 and she wrote this real account of a situation that occurred last weekend. This post is peppered with so much humor, truth, and life lessons…I had to share it with all of you. Please be encouraged to share this with your family and especially with your children. I also challenge you to go out there and Take Action as a result of being inspired by her words! Because Together is Better, As pretty much everyone in Arizona knows, there was a monumental and destructive rainstorm quite recently, causing many people immobility for hours. Arizona is commonly known for all of the dirt we have here, and that's exactly what came rushing onto local streets everywhere due to the storm. Now, this rainstorm was unlike any petty … [Read more...]

What is Your Money Vibe?

Money Vibe

What is your money vibe? Do you even know what a "money vibe" is? Vibe is short for vibration and "money vibe" can be summed up by noticing how you feel and act and talk about money. There are two extremes when it comes to your money vibe, and there are people scattered all in between these two extremes. I am not talking about being in debt versus being a millionaire. I am simply talking about your attitude towards money. Here are the two extremes. Where do you fit in? One extreme is this: There is a feeling of a sense of lack. If you believe this way about money, then you are always fretting about money. You talk about things being too expensive. You consciously or unconsciously fear that there will always be a shortage and you will never get ahead or have enough. You attract things … [Read more...]

Givers Gain

Givers Gain

This past week, something amazing happened to me: In two unrelated situations, on the same day, I was given a free meal and a free drink. The circumstances were different, and I did not ask for a free anything...yet, I was given both! I was so pleased about getting some things for free, even if it was just a breakfast sandwich and a frappuccino. Don't we all feel so great when we get something for free? It lifts my spirits and makes me feel so appreciative! That night I began reflecting on my day and my actions and began mentally listing all the things for which I was grateful. I stopped mid thought and I realized that I was receiving (or gaining) that day because I was being a giver...and "Givers Gain". I know this to be absolutely true. People who are stingy and aren't givers, … [Read more...]

The Art of Giving

Giving

The other day I found myself sitting in a restaurant by myself for lunch. I had a full day of errands to complete and a time schedule to keep. I ran in to get a quick bite before heading back to my tasks for the day. As I sat there engrossed in my veggie stir fry, I was approached by a young boy trying to sell me a huge box of pixy stix. He was rattling off a bunch of information as I was simultaneously half listening and devouring my lunch..."support children"..."stay off drugs"..."please help"..."donate". When I finally focused on the boy and his words, I realized he wanted me to give him money to support some children's club for under privileged children, which will help them stay off drugs. Since this was a Wednesday during lunch, I asked him if he attended school. He said he … [Read more...]

Look For Opportunities to Learn and Grow

Learn and Grow

This past week, I found myself in a number of different situations which allowed me to interact with many types of people. I had the privilege of talking with people of different ages, mental states, affluence, education, and social stature. All in the same week, I had the opportunity to substitute teach in a young class of special needs children, I was able to help prepare and serve lunch to over 150 homeless people, and I was lucky enough to socialize with my awesome "Small Group" of friends from church. Talk about all points on the spectrum! As I am a teacher and a positive influence to others, I very often play the "teacher" and "counselor" roles. That is what I do and that is what I love! It makes me happy to no end to see the proverbial light bulb come on. It warms my heart to … [Read more...]

It’s Better to Give than to Receive

giving

This phrase, "It's better to give than to receive", (Actually, these words, "It is more blessed to give then to receive" are from the Bible -NIV…said by Jesus) is one of the parenting standard phrases from anyone's childhood. I think we all heard this growing up…especially around Christmas time and Birthday celebrations. Our parents wanted to instill this quality. They wanted us to be grateful for the gifts and blessings we had in our lives. They wanted us to feel good about giving to others in general and others less fortunate. Now, as an adult and a parent, I find myself trying to teach the same life lesson to my kids. I don't think this is an easy lesson for kids to learn, because they are very egocentric by nature. When trying to model and … [Read more...]

Impact and Influence Others

Be

Funny how it is…well, it's actually quite sad…we usually are more concerned about how other's words and actions will affect us rather than being concerned about how our words and actions will affect others. We've all been there, we've all done it. In class, at work, at a party, we think to ourselves or voice to a friend, "OH NO, there's so-in-so! Whether they speak too loudly, drink too much, are negative, are obnoxious, rub us the wrong way, etc…we would rather not interact with them. They make us feel uncomfortable, we have to make small talk, and we can't wait to be released from their presence. We don't like the way their words and actions affect us. We even do it with strangers…if someone looks different or "weird" we don't want to … [Read more...]
