Helpful Cliché

stitch

My mom was the Queen of clichés when I was a child and she still is. If there was a situation that warranted a good use of a cliché, she would use one. I learned, and ignored, many life lessons based on whether I paid attention to my mom's clichés and applied them. This talent of pulling clichés out of a hat like a magician was inadvertently handed down to me as soon as I had my own children. I spew them off instinctually while my kids look at me confused, just as I used to look at my mom. I really think if more people paid attention to these wise words and put them to use, the world would be a less chaotic and calmer place. The other day, one of my daughters was getting out of her shower and she did not do a very thorough job of cleaning the glass with the squeegee. I made her go back … [Read more...]

Don’t Hesitate

hesitate

The other day I was pulling out of our neighborhood and onto a four-lane highway. Just as I was turning left, I could see a car out of the corning of my right eye rounding the curve and heading my way. My initial reaction was to hesitate, let off the gas, and make sure the car was going slow enough so that I would be able to make the turn and be safely ahead of it. In a flash, I decided that I had looked before turning and that I had enough time and space. I got on the gas, made my turn, and was way ahead of the car in question. If I had second-guessed my calculation and hesitated just a few seconds, there may have been trouble on the road. As I sped down the highway, I reflected on the past few minutes. All that went through my mind while I was turning was very similar to things that … [Read more...]

Conquering Temptation

temptation

Temptation is all around us. It corners us and tests our true character and our will power at every turn. It can be in the innocent form of a cupcake when you are trying to eat healthy...or it can be in the form of a handsome man flirting with you when your marriage is not "up to par". How do you handle temptation when you are faced with it? True character comes to test when a situation arises and there is nobody around to see how you respond. Someone with questionable character will give in to temptation no matter what the cost. If you are a person of great character, there is still a chance that you may want to give in to temptation. How do we handle that temptation? I think the best way to handle temptation with grace is to make a commitment to you. If you don't have boundaries and … [Read more...]

Doing the Right Thing

doing the right thing

My little thumb sucker Sometimes doing the right thing also means doing the hard thing. This is especially true when you are a parent raising children. Teaching our kids the difference between right and wrong is so important. Doing what you know is right in the long run can be hard to explain to a child when they can't see past tomorrow. For a couple of years now, my husband and I have known that we need to do something to help our youngest daughter stop sucking her thumb. She is the only one of our four daughters who has had this habit. My husband and I were both thumb suckers as children, so we both know how comforting it is and we also how hard of a habit it is to break. We both also wanted her to quit before she lost her two top teeth to avoid her permanent teeth from growing in … [Read more...]

Surviving Summer Break

Summer

Two weeks into summer break and I am about to literally ship my girls off to camp. I am seriously wondering how on Earth anyone can home school their kids! No offense if you do home school…but I think the six hours a day my kids are at school is very healthy for all of us in this family! I am totally bewildered; during the school months, I have to practically drag them out of bed in the morning. The day after school lets out; they wake up at the crack of dawn. During the school months, they are on task getting everything done on time. There is a natural flow of making beds, brushing teeth, getting dressed, homework, showers, and chores. School is out for summer, and they become brain dead…relishing sitting in front of the TV for hours on end. That's it! TV is the one difference in our … [Read more...]
