Got to or Get to?

get to

The other day I was walking to my car with a fellow teacher/mom friend after a day of teaching. She asked me what I was going to do the rest of the afternoon. I replied, "I have got to buy some groceries, then I have got to pick up Erin from Cross Country, then I have got to pick up Ryan from Student Council at the high school and take her to the orthodontist. Then I have got to go home, make dinner, help the girls with their homework, have them shower, and then I have got to put everyone to bed." Does this sound like a typical afternoon to you? When the kids get out of school for the day, it is rush, rush, rush! I hear a lot of parents talk just as I did above. I can feel the stress and sometimes the loathing in their voices. Do all your family tasks and obligations feel like a chore … [Read more...]

Take Your Focus off Your Problems

For the past several weeks I have had a plugged ear. It has not been painful, but it has been uncomfortable. It feels like I am under water. I have been to several doctors, including an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist. They have flushed, tested, and pressurized. I have been prescribed antibiotics, ear drops, and steroids. I'm still under water. When you have an ailment or a problem that you are dealing with, it is really easy to let that situation be in the forefront of your mind. It just is. Thinking about it, trying to solve it, hoping it will go away...all these thoughts can be self-consuming. If we let our minds really wonder, we can head straight down that negative spiral and think the worst: Is it cancer? Will I lose my hearing? How much longer can I take this? Will life … [Read more...]

Givers Gain

Givers Gain

This past week, something amazing happened to me: In two unrelated situations, on the same day, I was given a free meal and a free drink. The circumstances were different, and I did not ask for a free anything...yet, I was given both! I was so pleased about getting some things for free, even if it was just a breakfast sandwich and a frappuccino. Don't we all feel so great when we get something for free? It lifts my spirits and makes me feel so appreciative! That night I began reflecting on my day and my actions and began mentally listing all the things for which I was grateful. I stopped mid thought and I realized that I was receiving (or gaining) that day because I was being a giver...and "Givers Gain". I know this to be absolutely true. People who are stingy and aren't givers, … [Read more...]

Daily Gratitude

The more I read and learn and live life, the more I am convinced that GRATITUDE is one of the highest emotions we can experience. What I mean by "highest" is the vibration that it gives us and sends out to others when we are in a state of gratitude. I have noticed that when I am in gratitude, the feeling is so overwhelmingly lovely, it is hard to explain. Gratitude is right up there with LOVE. I think those two emotions are the highest emotions on the emotions scale…with these emotions come JOY, APPRECIATION, EMPOWERMENT, and FREEDOM! Who doesn't want to feel those emotions!?!? It is so easy to complain, to want more, and to be envious of others. But, with gratitude, what you have is enough! I love this quote by Melody Beattie: When you begin to be grateful for everything in your … [Read more...]

Two Sides of the Same Coin

two sides of the same coin

It is so easy to look at your circumstances from only one point of view. It is even easier to look at the negative side. I don't know what it is, but we human beings tend to master that very early in life and we hold on to that "Stinking Thinking" well into our adulthood…some even think this way until they are no longer on this plane. It is sad to think how often we talk about our problems instead of our successes. It is a depressing realization also that we think our situations are problems. We view them as a problem instead of an opportunity. We view them as a disappointment instead of as a blessing. Are you guilty of this? I know I sure am! We can take a look at our life and any situation or circumstance and put a negative spin on it: It's not good enough. I want more. If only … [Read more...]

Lincoln Wisdom

For two weeks now, I have been bombarded by the word "Lincoln"…EVERWHERE I looked, I saw this word; on cars, emblems, commercials, books, and magazines. Lincoln is the last name of a character in the "Mercy Watson" book series my youngest daughter is reading to me. The face of Abraham Lincoln was everywhere also…pennies, five-dollar bills, on TV, and on the internet. I even saw a license plate that read: A8RAHAM. I kept seeing and reading quotes said by our 16th President as well. As you may know, when I get struck by things over and over again, I know that means I need to delve into that topic for some reason. Usually there is a message for me or for YOU in that nudging! So, my research began on the word Lincoln. I found some really great ideas, and some remarkable words to live … [Read more...]

Take Ownership

take ownership

Ownership is a huge thing. It implies taking responsibility for your words, thoughts, and actions. Many people are far more comfortable blaming others rather than admitting fault or admitting their role in something gone wrong. I will get back to ownership in a minute. Everyone emits energy. Do you know what I mean? Some people have a very low and negative energy, while some people have a very high and positive energy. There are a variety of people who fit somewhere in between these two extremes. If you tune in, you can feel other people's energy. You can also become aware of the energy you are giving off. I am very calm and mellow, but I am also very positive. So I am way more comfortable being around people who are positive and energized by life. I, also, am very uncomfortable … [Read more...]

Whose Grass Are You Watering?

The grass is greener

About a year and a half ago, I wrote a blog post entitled, "Comparison is a Dangerous Act!" and it is! So many people compare themselves to others in a not-so-healthy way. Please take a few minutes and read it, as this blog post will build on that topic. I am going to go one step further…to the topic of Envy! Comparison is a negative act, in that you are judging others and yourself. Envy goes further down the negative spiral in that if you are envious of someone, you are coveting and putting more energy into their blessings than into your own. Envy is best defined as a resentful emotion that "occurs when a person lacks another's (perceived) superior quality, achievement or possession and wishes that the other lacked it." That definition of envy is scary in itself, but let's dig a … [Read more...]
