Are Your Expectations Getting in the Way?

I am a stickler for schedules: I have bedtimes for my kids. We eat at roughly the same time every night. We have a pretty tight after school schedule with homework, chores, dinner, showers, etc. Mornings flow just as nicely with beds being made, teeth being brushed, breakfast eaten, backpacks stuffed…and out the door. I believe that children thrive with healthy boundaries and I try to keep our family life right on schedule. As our second oldest daughter entered high school this year, and our youngest two daughters have more activities and homework...we naturally have more schedules to juggle. So, being the Mom and calendar keeper, I am busier than ever trying to make our lives flow without too many hiccoughs. Here is where the "Expectations" part enters the scene. You see, when … [Read more...]

Life is Like a Sitcom

"A situation comedy, often shortened to sitcom, is a genre of comedy that features characters sharing the same common environment, such as a home or workplace, with often humorous dialogue. Such programs originated in radio, but today, sitcoms are found mostly on television as one of its dominant narrative forms." Think about your favorite sitcom. Think about all the silly and frustrating situations that we watch and that make us laugh. The characters get into predicaments that we would cringe at if they actually happened to us. We would be impatient, get angry, and say things that aren't very nice. The characters on TV that are quirky and make us laugh on our couches would irritate us to no end in real life. We would bitch and moan, complain, and find no humor in it at all. We … [Read more...]

Daily Gratitude

The more I read and learn and live life, the more I am convinced that GRATITUDE is one of the highest emotions we can experience. What I mean by "highest" is the vibration that it gives us and sends out to others when we are in a state of gratitude. I have noticed that when I am in gratitude, the feeling is so overwhelmingly lovely, it is hard to explain. Gratitude is right up there with LOVE. I think those two emotions are the highest emotions on the emotions scale…with these emotions come JOY, APPRECIATION, EMPOWERMENT, and FREEDOM! Who doesn't want to feel those emotions!?!? It is so easy to complain, to want more, and to be envious of others. But, with gratitude, what you have is enough! I love this quote by Melody Beattie: When you begin to be grateful for everything in your … [Read more...]

Lincoln Wisdom

For two weeks now, I have been bombarded by the word "Lincoln"…EVERWHERE I looked, I saw this word; on cars, emblems, commercials, books, and magazines. Lincoln is the last name of a character in the "Mercy Watson" book series my youngest daughter is reading to me. The face of Abraham Lincoln was everywhere also…pennies, five-dollar bills, on TV, and on the internet. I even saw a license plate that read: A8RAHAM. I kept seeing and reading quotes said by our 16th President as well. As you may know, when I get struck by things over and over again, I know that means I need to delve into that topic for some reason. Usually there is a message for me or for YOU in that nudging! So, my research began on the word Lincoln. I found some really great ideas, and some remarkable words to live … [Read more...]

Love Letter to Self

love letter

How many love letters do you think you have written to other people in your lifetime? I'm not just talking about love letters to a perspective or current flame…but also to your mom, dad, friends, siblings, children, bosses, teachers, coaches, grandparents, etc. A love letter is a letter in which you are writing an expression of your gratitude and affection towards another person. So, with all the birthdays, graduations, weddings, anniversaries, etc…how many love letters do you think you have written to people who are important in your life? I would bet that it is in the hundreds. I bet it is more than you can remember or dream of. "Writing" a letter, can also include putting loving and grateful words on greeting cards, sticky notes, text messages, and emails. The list is growing, isn't … [Read more...]

Whose Grass Are You Watering?

The grass is greener

About a year and a half ago, I wrote a blog post entitled, "Comparison is a Dangerous Act!" and it is! So many people compare themselves to others in a not-so-healthy way. Please take a few minutes and read it, as this blog post will build on that topic. I am going to go one step further…to the topic of Envy! Comparison is a negative act, in that you are judging others and yourself. Envy goes further down the negative spiral in that if you are envious of someone, you are coveting and putting more energy into their blessings than into your own. Envy is best defined as a resentful emotion that "occurs when a person lacks another's (perceived) superior quality, achievement or possession and wishes that the other lacked it." That definition of envy is scary in itself, but let's dig a … [Read more...]

Everything in Moderation

"Moderation. Small helpings. Sample a little bit of everything. These are the secrets of happiness and good health." – Julia Child   Most people know that certain things in excess are harmful and even fatal…such as drugs and alcohol. We know that when we over eat, as we do during Thanksgiving dinner, we feel really horrible…but we do it anyway. Most people have heard the saying, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." But some people are coined as being "workaholics". So I guess working in excess is harmful also. I know people who take a good thing, like working out, and make it a several-hour-a-day venture. Is that healthy or not? Did you know that you can die from drinking too much water? Yes, you read it right; it's called "water intoxication"! Anything in excess … [Read more...]
