Inspired By My Teenager

inspired

This week, I am spotlighting one of my daughters. Ryan is almost 15 and she wrote this real account of a situation that occurred last weekend. This post is peppered with so much humor, truth, and life lessons…I had to share it with all of you. Please be encouraged to share this with your family and especially with your children. I also challenge you to go out there and Take Action as a result of being inspired by her words! Because Together is Better, As pretty much everyone in Arizona knows, there was a monumental and destructive rainstorm quite recently, causing many people immobility for hours. Arizona is commonly known for all of the dirt we have here, and that's exactly what came rushing onto local streets everywhere due to the storm. Now, this rainstorm was unlike any petty … [Read more...]

Overcoming Stereotypes and Stigmas

overcoming

I was chatting over a Starbucks with a friend the other morning and we got to talking about how people can look at the same situation and have a different opinion about it. We delved specifically into "stereotypes" and "stigmas". Those can be such ugly words, with deep meaning and lots of emotions and opinions tied to them. Obviously when someone says a word, you will conjure up all your personal experiences you have had, and they all culminate into your opinion. Let's take the word and profession of Real Estate Agent. What immediately comes to your mind? Well, if you have had nothing but awesome experiences with Real Estate Agents, and all your transactions have run smoothly, then you may have a very positive opinion about people in that profession. If you have never bought a home or … [Read more...]

Keep Everything in Perspective

Perspective

When I was in seventh grade, I received the greatest Christmas gift of all: My dad bought me and my three siblings each a new set of luggage. I loved my new three piece set from the moment I saw it…it was sturdy, red, and it was all mine! I loved it even more as I unzipped each section and pocket and discovered several fun gifts neatly wrapped and stuffed inside. Christmas kept giving, as I opened up the last pocket; inside were airline tickets to Mexico! We were taking a family vacation to Mazatlan, Mexico!!! Boy was I excited! After our fabulous time in Mexico, our Christmas break was coming to an end, and we returned home to snowy Colorado. When we were taking our luggage out of the trunk of our car, I noticed something quite disturbing: My brand new large carry-on piece had "Black … [Read more...]

What Do Circumstances Reveal About You?

Circumstances

I read a quote the other day by Dr. Wayne Dyer, "Circumstances do not make a man, they reveal him." I think this is very true. I am sure you have witnessed people who have been in a situation which causes stress, or a circumstance that was out of their control, just as I have. There are many different responses that can take place: Anger, self-pity, frustration, blame, or worse. Some people take the high road and exhibit calm, go-with the-flow, and the like. What do circumstances reveal about you? My husband and I were in the airport the other day, beginning our vacation, and the line to check in our bags was over an hour long! I had never been to the airport when it was this busy...EVER! As a result of the long, long line, we missed our flight, along with many other people. Luckily … [Read more...]

A Compliment in Disguise

a compliment

Do you remember when you were a teenager and someone copied you in some regard, and it was not a good thing? If someone dressed like you, or wanted to act like you, or heaven forbid liked the same person as you...it was an awful thing. Even though we wanted to fit in, we all still wanted to be unique and original, and known for our style. A total oxymoron. I remember when I was a teenager; this girl liked the same boy I did. I was not happy about it, probably because I was insecure. It's easy to see that looking back and not so easy when you are in the midst of emotions and hormones. I remember at that time, a wise woman told me not to be jealous or angry toward this girl, because she was probably a lot like me since she had the same taste as I did. She also said that instead of feeling … [Read more...]

Love is a Decision

love is a decision

About a year ago, my husband told me he wanted to get a new puppy. It had almost been a year since our sweet Australian Shepherd, Chicky, had passed on. He was ready. I was not. Although I missed Chicky, I was really enjoying the house not being hairy and not having to smell her and her food, and not dealing with the dog poop. I was also getting quite use to the freedom of coming and going and travelling without having to make plans for Chicky. My thinking was this: We had always had a dog but that doesn't mean that we always have to have a dog, does it? Why can't we just enjoy this new season of our dog-less lives? Well, when you are in a relationship, sometimes you need to compromise to keep the peace. This was a time when I had to put my husband's needs before my own. I am a little … [Read more...]

Life is Gradual

Life is gradual

How does it happen? One day we wake up and life has snuck up on us. We are no longer a child, no longer a carefree twenty-something...we are all of a sudden in our forties...YIKES! I know a lot of people can get blindsided by extra weight gain, or by being unhappy with themselves in one way or another. They wake up one morning and ask themselves, "How did I get here?" It appears that life is going along as usual and one day your life isn't what you thought it would be. Have you been in that position? Well, most things in life sneak up on us in a gradual way. We don't all of a sudden gain fifty pounds, thank God! We don't spontaneously have four teenagers in the house, double thank God for that! We don't become an alcoholic overnight and we don't advance to the top in one day. Life … [Read more...]
