Give it Your All


While growing up, my Dad would often remind me and my siblings not to do things "Half-Assed". Some of you may have heard this put in a more politically correct way: "A job worth doing is a job worth doing well!" Some of you never heard either of these phrases growing up, so I will help you understand. My Dad said these phrases often, and it pertained to anything we were doing: Homework, housework, organizing, showering, or playing a sport…you name it; if we could do it…we were expected to give it our all! I'm not too sure that during my childhood I much embraced the notion, because as a child I wanted to just get through the task at hand as quickly and painlessly as possible. The Only Way is…Up!


One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey.   He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw.
