Got to or Get to?

get to

The other day I was walking to my car with a fellow teacher/mom friend after a day of teaching. She asked me what I was going to do the rest of the afternoon. I replied, "I have got to buy some groceries, then I have got to pick up Erin from Cross Country, then I have got to pick up Ryan from Student Council at the high school and take her to the orthodontist. Then I have got to go home, make dinner, help the girls with their homework, have them shower, and then I have got to put everyone to bed." Does this sound like a typical afternoon to you? When the kids get out of school for the day, it is rush, rush, rush! I hear a lot of parents talk just as I did above. I can feel the stress and sometimes the loathing in their voices. Do all your family tasks and obligations feel like a chore … [Read more...]

Take Your Focus off Your Problems

For the past several weeks I have had a plugged ear. It has not been painful, but it has been uncomfortable. It feels like I am under water. I have been to several doctors, including an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist. They have flushed, tested, and pressurized. I have been prescribed antibiotics, ear drops, and steroids. I'm still under water. When you have an ailment or a problem that you are dealing with, it is really easy to let that situation be in the forefront of your mind. It just is. Thinking about it, trying to solve it, hoping it will go away...all these thoughts can be self-consuming. If we let our minds really wonder, we can head straight down that negative spiral and think the worst: Is it cancer? Will I lose my hearing? How much longer can I take this? Will life … [Read more...]

Daily Gratitude

The more I read and learn and live life, the more I am convinced that GRATITUDE is one of the highest emotions we can experience. What I mean by "highest" is the vibration that it gives us and sends out to others when we are in a state of gratitude. I have noticed that when I am in gratitude, the feeling is so overwhelmingly lovely, it is hard to explain. Gratitude is right up there with LOVE. I think those two emotions are the highest emotions on the emotions scale…with these emotions come JOY, APPRECIATION, EMPOWERMENT, and FREEDOM! Who doesn't want to feel those emotions!?!? It is so easy to complain, to want more, and to be envious of others. But, with gratitude, what you have is enough! I love this quote by Melody Beattie: When you begin to be grateful for everything in your … [Read more...]

Excitement or Fear?

excitement or fear

I am so excited! I guess you can say I am fearful as well. I have learned that excitement and fear are in the same family, they are just a small perspective shift away from each other. Are you aware of that? You can be afraid of something, but if you shift your attitude and perspective just a bit, then it can turn into excitement. How FUN is that!?!? I have been doing a lot of this lately, and it feels so great! I am stretching and growing so much as a result of this new practice. I liken it to a roller coaster ride: When I am in a line to get on a roller coaster, I am a bundle of nerves. I am watching the steel car whoosh past me at lightning speed, I am hearing the terrifying screams, and I am anticipating my heart dropping to my toes. I am so nervous and afraid. After I get on that … [Read more...]

Replacing Painful Memories

Everyone can think back to a time or place where they remember a not-so-pleasant memory, because we all have some painful memories from our past. These memories could be from when we were really young, or it could be from something that just happened last week. Our senses trigger memories, as it flips through our filing cabinet called our subconscious. Somehow our subconscious can recall a memory like it was yesterday, through thoughts, smells, sights and sounds. Some memories are very scary and evoke a lot of pain. Those are the types of memories that need varying levels of counseling in order to work through. There are some memories, however, that conjure up some nasty feelings, but they do not necessarily need counseling to get past. These are the types of topics I will be … [Read more...]

Right on Time

right on time

When my youngest daughter Quinn was just a toddler, she would quite often tell me something that really helped me to be present. At times, we would be rushing to get into the car and off to "somewhere" and I would say out of habit, "Hurry girls or we will be late!" My insightful, joyful, and naturally positive Quinn would always reply, "Mom, we're gonna be right on time!" The way she said this was so emphatic, as if she were intending it to be so. And, truth be told, we were always "right on time". "Right on time" may not be by a clock's standard, but we were always arriving at the perfect time…just when someone was pulling out of the front parking space. We would arrive at the very same time as the person we were meeting. We would arrive just as the rain stopped. The list goes on and … [Read more...]

Lincoln Wisdom

For two weeks now, I have been bombarded by the word "Lincoln"…EVERWHERE I looked, I saw this word; on cars, emblems, commercials, books, and magazines. Lincoln is the last name of a character in the "Mercy Watson" book series my youngest daughter is reading to me. The face of Abraham Lincoln was everywhere also…pennies, five-dollar bills, on TV, and on the internet. I even saw a license plate that read: A8RAHAM. I kept seeing and reading quotes said by our 16th President as well. As you may know, when I get struck by things over and over again, I know that means I need to delve into that topic for some reason. Usually there is a message for me or for YOU in that nudging! So, my research began on the word Lincoln. I found some really great ideas, and some remarkable words to live … [Read more...]

Lose Control

Have you ever noticed that whenever people feel mad, frustrated, sad, guilty, disappointed, and so on…that it seems to stem from something else that's bothering them, maybe a deeper issue? It actually stems from their need to control something or someone. The need to Control is based in Fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of the outcome, fear of failure, fear of letting someone down, fear of a missed opportunity, etc. Think back to the last time you felt one of these negative emotions. What was it all about? If you dig to the root of it all, it is because you were trying to control something or someone that you could not control. If you are frustrated about the traffic, it's because you want everyone to move out of your way. If you are angry because your toddler isn't minding you, it's because … [Read more...]
